Special Introduction by the Rev. Peter Marshall son of the late Dr. Peter Marshall

In the 22 years between the time penniless Scottish immigrant Peter Marshall set foot on American soil at Ellis Island, New York in 1927 at the age of 24, and his untimely death in 1949, he became one of America's greatest preachers. Pastor of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C., and Chaplain of the U.S. Senate, my father was the subject of the book written by my mother, Catherine Marshall, and the subsequent movie, "A Man Called Peter."

Perhaps some one might wonder whether people today would be interested in hearing the sermons of a preacher who has been dead for more than 50 years. Aren't these messages out of date?

The truth is that the deepest issues of life are the same for us as they were for our parents and grandparents before us. We have the same types of fears and anxieties, hopes and dreams as they did. We too worry about how our children will turn out, about whether there will be enough money to pay the bills, how to properly take care of our aging parents.

My father was uniquely gifted by God to preach to people's hearts about those issues. With near perfect diction, and a Churchillian mastery of the English language, he nonetheless communicated in such a down-to-earth way that even first-time listeners felt that he knew them personally, and understood their problems.

For Dad, the Christian faith was always about the reality of Jesus Christ, and His desire to draw each and every one of us into a personal relationship with Him as Savior and Lord. That was what he lived for in his preaching and ministry, to make Jesus real to people. He succeeded. When he preached about Jesus, as one woman put it, "We seemed actually to feel Christ beside us, to hear the rustling of His robes."

With our nation in desperate spiritual and moral crisis, there has never been a greater need for the Savior whom my father preached so eloquently. And Jesus Christ is just as available to us through these recorded sermons, as He was when Dad first preached them. It is my prayer that, as you listen, you will find the reality of Jesus in a fresh and new way.

With few exceptions, most of these sermons are available to the public for the first time since my father first preached them five decades ago.

Because of the primitive state of tape recording then, the original recordings needed a lot of audio work. But thanks to the wonders of modern sound technology and fervent prayer we are able to present these sermons to you.
